TRUE NORTH - SUmmer 2021

After Summer 2020, we knew for sure things would be back to normal by the following summer. However, these past 18 months have been anything but predictable! As the months drew on and the pandemic persisted, we realized we would have to think outside the box for summer 2021. Out of an abundance of caution, a modified, 3 part program was developed in lieu of our traditional overnight summer camps.

We sent our summer staff to Corps for day camp in our “Camp to the Corps” program, invited Salvation Army Corps to bring their families to camp on the weekends for times of fellowship and social distanced camp fun in our “Family Camp” program, and encouraged any kid within CalSouth division to attend a weekly camp-themed zoom class in our “Virtual Camp Electives” program. Given that none of us had ever ran programs like these – let alone three of them at once – we knew we had our work cut out for us. Despite the challenges, God provided everything we needed to make Summer 2021 a fun, safe and successful one.

Our theme this summer was “True North” – the idea that God and His Word are our North star, a never changing beacon of hope in the good times and the bad. No matter what happens in this crazy world of ours, God is steadfast in his love for us. He is not surprised by the events of 2020 or 2021. He still has us in his hands. This is the message we wanted to convey to our campers and staff. We drove this home with our theme verse, Hebrews 13:8.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

This summer we introduced a new highlight to our summer ministries which allowed for camp to share the gospel of Christ in a creative way by bringing all three camps together once a week to watch Jesus Theatre.  This production, put on by our program staff, told the story of creation, fall and redemption through Christ's victory on the cross.  It was incredible to see how God used this way of telling His story of salvation and opened opportunities for camp staff to share the good new of Christ with campers.

We finished off the summer with our first ever Teen Week at Camp Gilmore.  We welcomed in 75 campers and had an amazing time doing wilderness type activities each day, like hiking, boldering or going to the beach.  We also had team competitions throughout the week.  Campers would have daily activities or games that would earn their color team (red, green, purple, blue) points.  Some of these activities included a giant color war, an all camp relay race and camp wide games.  We closed off the final night of camp with a time of worship and prayer.  It was amazing to see so many youth being lead in prayer by cabin leaders and staff while gathered around the campfire.

Praise God for the work he is doing through the ministry of Camp Mt Crags, Gilmore and Wilderness.  We are so thankful to all the staff and volunteers who served throughout the summer in amazing ways.  We look forward to see what 2017 will bring.
